San Jose enjoys a drier, sunnier version of Bay Area golf, sheltered from the fog that grips San Francisco. The season is effectively year-round, with winter rain the only regular interruption. Afternoon onshore breezes pick up reliably in spring and summer, favoring morning rounds.
San Jose's golf calendar is largely shaped by when the rain shows up — and just as importantly, when it stops. The wet season front-loads itself into winter: December and March each clock 14 precip days, January adds 11, and February contributes 8. That's a lot of cart-path-only notices and soggy lies concentrated in a tight window. Once April arrives, the rain largely evaporates — literally. April and May each drop to just 5 precip days, June and August fall to 1 precip day, July to 2, and the fairways spend months draining and hardening, producing firm turf through late summer.
That dry stretch from June through September is where San Jose separates itself from much of the Bay Area. Courses that were saturated in January are running hard by midsummer, and you can count on a clean lie in the fairway more often than not. Mornings stay calmer, so players who want firm turf and light wind need to tee off early.
March is the wettest month of the year at 14 precip days, but April cuts that to 5 — a dramatic turnaround in four weeks. By May, average highs reach 76°F and the fairways are firming up nicely. Peak winds climb to 14.2 mph in May, so morning tee times beat the afternoon onshore surge.
June through August averages just 1 precip day per month, leaving courses dry and fast. Highs peak at 86°F in August — warm but workable for most golfers. Wind is the main variable, with June hitting the year's peak at 14.9 mph; early rounds sidestep the worst of it.
September brings highs of 84°F and October cools to 78°F, with wind easing to 13 and 11.2 mph. October's 6 precip days leave plenty of clear windows, and the fairways are still firm from the long dry summer. It's the most balanced month on the calendar for conditions.
December matches March for the most precip days at 14, and January follows with 11 — expect soft, slow fairways and temporary ground rules in effect at many courses. The upside is that wind is at its calmest: December averages just 8.1 mph, the lowest of any month. Highs sit at 59°F in both December and January, which keeps the site's ideal 60–80°F window just out of reach most days.
April drops to just 5 precip days as the wet season retreats, highs reach 69°F, and wind hasn't yet built to summer levels. October pairs a 78°F average high with only 6 precip days and easing wind at 11.2 mph — firm fairways from the dry summer are still in play. November extends the good stretch with 7 precip days and the calmest winds outside of December at 8.7 mph, while highs of 65°F stay comfortable.
The transition happens fast. March still logs 14 precip days, but April falls to 5 and May matches that. Most courses in the area are playing firm and dry by mid-to-late April, and the fairways stay that way through September's 4 precip days.
