Short answer: 50°F is the typical comfort floor. Below 50°F, expect distance loss and stiffer muscles. Below 40°F, most recreational golfers call it off. The ball itself becomes noticeably less responsive under 40°F.
| Temperature | Playability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 60–80°F | Ideal | Comfort range. Full distance. |
| 50–60°F | Cool | Minor distance loss. Dress in layers. |
| 40–50°F | Cold | 5–10 yards shorter. Stiff muscles. |
| 32–40°F | Hard | Balls lose compression. Greens firm up. |
| Below 32°F | Usually closed | Frozen greens, frost delays. |
For every 10°F drop below 70°F, expect roughly 2–3 yards of carry loss on full iron shots. The biggest change happens below 50°F, where both the ball and your muscles perform worse. Our playability score applies up to 20 points of temperature penalty in extreme cold.
