Sedona golf features red rock scenery and high-desert climate. Elevation keeps temperatures cooler than Phoenix. Spring and fall are ideal. Summer monsoon brings brief afternoon storms. Winter can see occasional frost at elevation.
Sedona's golf year breaks into three distinct acts. The prime window runs April through May and again September through November — comfortable highs, manageable wind, and the red rock backdrop at its most vivid. Then comes the grind: June through August, when highs climb to 91–93°F and afternoon monsoon storms roll in almost daily in July and August (10 precip days each). Finally, the sneaky-good off-season — December through February — offers lows in the 31–33°F range but afternoon highs of 51–55°F, calm winds as low as 9.6 mph in December, and courses that are often uncrowded.
Sitting at roughly 4,500 feet, Sedona runs 10–15°F cooler than the Phoenix Valley floor, which is exactly why summer is a grind here rather than an outright shutdown. But that elevation also means January lows dip to 31°F, so morning tee times in winter require patience while the frost burns off. Know the three acts, plan accordingly, and Sedona rewards you with some of the most distinctive golf terrain in the Southwest.
April and May are the crown of Sedona's golf calendar, with highs reaching 72°F and 78°F respectively. The catch: both months tie for the windiest of the year at 13.9 mph average peak, which will test club selection on exposed canyon-rim holes. Precip drops to just 5 days per month, so rain interruptions are rare — the wind is your main adversary.
June is actually the driest month (3 precip days) and the hottest stretch starts here, with highs hitting 91°F before peaking at 93°F in July. By mid-summer the monsoon pattern kicks in: July and August each average 10 precip days, mostly brief but heavy afternoon storms that can strand you mid-round. Tee off early, be off by noon, and summer golf in Sedona is doable — ignore that advice and you'll be sheltering under a ramada.
Highs ease from 85°F in September down to 62°F in November, and precip days drop to 6, 6, and 4 respectively. Winds stay in the 10–11 mph range — still noticeable but a clear step down from the spring peaks. October's 74°F average high and 50°F low land squarely in the site's ideal temperature band, making it arguably the single best month on the calendar.
December is Sedona's calmest wind month (9.6 mph), with January close behind at 9.8 mph, which takes some of the sting out of cold mornings. Lows drop to 31–33°F, so frost delays on elevated tees are a real possibility, but afternoon highs of 51–55°F are workable if you're dressed for it. Precip days tick up (7–9 per month), and while snow is rare at this elevation, a wet winter round is always in play.
October and November combine highs of 74°F and 62°F with only 6 and 4 precip days, and winds of 11.4 and 10.6 mph — among the calmest months outside of mid-winter. April and May deliver warmer highs (72°F and 78°F) and the same low precip count of 5 days each, though the 13.9 mph average peak wind adds a challenge. Together these four months represent Sedona's most consistently playable conditions.
Snow does fall occasionally at Sedona's ~4,500-foot elevation, but it rarely accumulates enough to close courses for more than a day. December and January average 7 and 9 precip days respectively, and wet or cold rain is far more common than snow. A frost delay on a cold morning (lows hit 31°F in January) is a more likely disruption than an outright snow closure.
It's playable if you manage your tee time carefully. June highs reach 91°F but the month averages only 3 precip days — the driest of the year. July and August push highs to 90–93°F and add 10 precip days each from afternoon monsoon storms, so early morning rounds (off by noon) are the standard local practice. Hydrate aggressively and check the forecast before you head out.
December is Sedona's calmest month, averaging 9.6 mph peak wind, followed closely by January at 9.8 mph. December and January are the two calmest months on the calendar, with November a step above them at 10.6 mph. By contrast, April and May average 13.9 mph — the windiest months — so expect meaningful club adjustments during those otherwise excellent spring rounds.
