Denver's high-elevation climate creates bigger day-to-night temperature swings than most golf cities. Afternoon winds commonly increase as mixing deepens, and spring can bring fast weather changes in a single tee sheet. Summer mornings are often your best window before heat, gusts, or pop-up storms develop.
Denver's shoulder seasons are where the golf debate gets interesting. Spring looks appealing on paper — highs climbing from 52°F in March to 68°F by May — but May is also the wettest month of the year at 16 precip days, and April is the windiest at 12 mph average peak wind. Fall, by contrast, gives you September's 82°F highs with only 7 precip days and winds easing to 10.8 mph. The case for fall over spring is hard to argue against.
Peak summer (July–August) offers the hottest highs at 88°F and 87°F, but those temperatures can push well past the 80°F comfort ceiling at altitude, and afternoon thunderstorms are a near-daily concern in July's 12 precip days. Late April, when highs reach 61°F and precip days haven't yet climbed to May's peak, is the one spring window worth targeting — but only if you dodge the snowstorms that still arrive through April. Understanding the tradeoffs between these windows is the key to getting the most out of golf weather in Denver.
March highs reach only 52°F with lows at 24°F, meaning morning tee times can feel more like late November elsewhere. April warms to a 61°F high but also peaks as the windiest month of the year at 12 mph average. By May the temperatures are genuinely pleasant, but 16 precip days — the most of any month — make reliable tee times a real gamble.
July tops out at an 88°F average high with lows at 60°F, which means morning rounds start comfortably but midday heat at 5,280 feet hits harder than sea-level equivalents. Precip days hold at 11–12 from June through August, and afternoon thunderstorms tend to develop quickly with little warning. Tee off before noon and watch the western sky.
September averages an 82°F high with only 7 precip days — a figure shared with October and November — and winds drop to 10.8 mph. The 30°F daily swing (high 82°F, low 52°F) is the largest of any month, so afternoon rounds stay comfortable while early morning starters will want a layer. October cools to a 66°F high but keeps that same 7-precip-day calm, extending the window into mid-autumn.
December is technically the calmest month at 9.6 mph and the driest at just 6 precip days, but average highs of 44°F and lows of 20°F make playable conditions rare and course closures common. January matches December's calm winds but holds the year's coldest low at 15°F. If a warm spell pushes the high past 50°F and the fairways are clear, winter rounds happen — just not reliably.
September combines an 82°F average high, only 7 precip days, and winds at 10.8 mph — the best convergence of temperature, dryness, and calm in the entire calendar. October follows closely with a 66°F high, the same 7 precip days, and 10.6 mph winds, among the calmer readings of any non-winter month. Neither month carries May's 16-day rain risk or June–August's afternoon storm pattern.
Fall wins on nearly every metric. September has an 82°F average high and just 7 precip days; May, the heart of spring golf season, logs 16 precip days — the most of any month. April is also the windiest month at 12 mph average peak wind. Spring has its moments in late April when temperatures are pleasant, but the rain and wind risk is consistently higher than what you get in September and October.
Altitude amplifies several factors beyond just ball distance. The thinner air means afternoon convective storms develop and intensify faster than at lower elevations, making the July–August storm window especially sharp. Temperature swings are also larger — September's 30°F gap between high and low is the biggest of any month — so what you wear at an 8 a.m. tee time may be wrong by the back nine.
Snow can fall any month from October through May in Denver, though it's most likely December through March when lows drop to 15–24°F. The good news is that Denver's dry climate means snow often melts within a day or two of a storm, and December's 6 precip days are the fewest of the year. That said, courses close unpredictably during cold stretches, so booking tee times in winter without a flexible cancellation policy is a bad idea.
