Salt Lake City golf runs from April through October, with June and September offering the best conditions. Elevation creates dry air and big temperature swings. Afternoon storms develop from mountain heating in summer.
From March's 17 precip days collapsing all the way down to July's 2, Salt Lake City's rain rhythm is one of the sharpest swings in the Mountain West — and that arc drives everything about when fairways play firm. The heavy spring moisture keeps turf soft well into April's 13 precip days. Then a hard pivot: June drops to just 6 precip days, July bottoms out at 2, and September sits at only 4. That dry stretch from late June through September means firm, fast turf that rewards accurate iron play.
The flip side is that Salt Lake City's desert-adjacent air drains moisture quickly once the rains stop. The Wasatch Range sitting directly east creates mountain-driven convection, so those few summer precip days tend to arrive as brief afternoon cells rather than soaking all-day events. A morning tee time in July is almost a guarantee of dry conditions — the question is usually wind and heat, not puddles.
March's 17 precip days and April's 13 make early spring the muddiest stretch on the Salt Lake City golf calendar. Temperatures climb from a 60°F average high in April to 71°F in May, but May's 11 precip days mean soggy lies remain possible well past Mother's Day. By late May, windows between systems widen and the ground firms up noticeably.
July averages just 2 precip days — the driest month in the data — producing the firmest fairways of the year. The tradeoff is a 95°F average high and a 27°F daily temperature swing that demands early tee times. September's 4 precip days are nearly as few as July's, but the 82°F average high is far more comfortable for a full round. October adds a few more rain days (7) and temperatures drop to a 66°F average high, but fairways stay relatively firm through most of the month. Fall is the window where both heat and mud are largely off the table.
January averages 16 precip days and December averages 13, and average highs of 39°F make playable conditions rare. Most of that precipitation falls as snow at Salt Lake City's elevation, leaving courses closed or cart-path-only. February lightens to 11 precip days and a 41°F average high, offering occasional mild days but nothing reliable.
June and July have the fewest precip days of the year — 6 and 2, respectively — producing the firmest fairways. The transition happens fast once you clear May. April logs 13 precip days and May still averages 11, keeping fairways soft. June cuts that to 6 and July drops to just 2 precip days, so most courses are playing firm and fast by mid-June. If you need reliable firm conditions, wait until the last week of June at the earliest.
July is the driest month with only 2 precip days, but the Wasatch Range generates localized convection that can produce quick-moving cells on even clear-looking afternoons. The storms are typically short but can carry lightning. A morning tee time before noon gives you the best chance of completing a full round uninterrupted throughout summer.
October is solid but not exceptional. The average high of 66°F sits right in the comfortable range, and 7 precip days is low enough that you'll find more dry days than wet ones. Winds ease to 11.7 mph — calmer than the summer months — and the fairways carry some of the summer's firmness into early fall. Just be aware that temperatures can drop quickly late in the month as the average low hits 43°F.
