Madison golf season runs May through October with isthmus-influenced weather from the surrounding lakes. Summer delivers the best conditions. Wind off the lakes adds challenge. Fall color rounds in September are popular.
A 19°F daily swing in May and June is the first thing to account for when planning a Madison round. In May you can tee off near the 50°F low and finish peeling off a layer as the high climbs to 69°F; in June mornings open around 61°F before the afternoon pushes to 80°F. That gap affects more than your outfit: a cold ball in the early morning compresses less, meaning you'll lose a few yards off the tee before temperatures climb. Bring an extra layer and adjust your yardage expectations on the first few holes.
The city sits on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, and lake air funnels onto fairways in ways that amplify perceived temperature differences. April is both the windiest month (14.3 mph peak) and the wettest (15 precip days), so early-season rounds often feel colder than the 55°F average high suggests. July and August settle things down — lows stay in the mid-60s, highs peak at 81–82°F, and winds drop to a calmest-of-year 10–10.2 mph — putting conditions squarely in the ideal scoring range.
April is the most difficult month to dress for in Madison: a 55°F high and 38°F low means a 17°F swing, paired with the windiest conditions of the year at 14.3 mph. May improves the high to 69°F but keeps the daily range at 19°F, the largest of any month. On courses along Lake Mendota, the morning combination of 38°F lows and 14.3 mph April winds can push perceived temps well below the thermometer reading — plan for at least three layers and factor in extra club on wind-assisted holes before the afternoon warm-up.
July and August share a 17°F daily range, the tightest of the summer months — conditions where a single mid-layer at dawn is usually all you need. Winds calm to 10 mph in July and 10.2 mph in August, the two calmest months on the calendar. June is the gateway, with 80°F highs and only 12 precip days.
September averages a 74°F high and 57°F low, with only 11 precip days — one of the lighter rain months of the year. October cools to a 60°F high and 45°F low, which is right at the lower edge of the ideal 60–80°F range; morning rounds can feel stiff when lows dip to the mid-40s. Winds tick back up to 12.6 mph in October — meaningful enough to factor into club selection even if calmer than April's 14.3 mph peak.
January averages a 29°F high and a 15°F low — the coldest low of the year — and logs 13 precip days that frequently fall as snow. February is technically the driest month at 8 precip days, but a 33°F high still makes for a frozen course. December's 13°F daily swing is the smallest of the year, which means what cold you get, you keep all day.
July and August offer the calmest winds of the year (10 and 10.2 mph) with average highs of 82°F and 81°F and lows of 64–65°F, keeping the daily range manageable. June adds 80°F highs and only 12 precip days, while September brings 11 precip days and a still-comfortable 74°F high. June through August keep lows at or above 61°F; September's 57°F low stays within comfortable range while its 74°F high anchors the afternoon.
June is the reliable start of comfortable conditions, with an 80°F average high, 61°F average low, and winds easing to 11.7 mph. May is playable but the 19°F daily swing means morning rounds around 50°F are common, so comfortable really depends on your tee time. If you want warmth throughout the round, wait for late June or July.
In May and June, the swing between overnight lows and afternoon highs reaches 19°F — the largest of any month. A cold golf ball in 50°F air loses measurable compression and can cost you yards on drives before the temperature climbs. Scheduling afternoon tee times in spring narrows that gap and gives you a better read on real carry distances.
September is the stronger choice: 74°F average high, 57°F average low, and only 11 precip days — the lightest of the four prime-season months (June 12, July 14, August 13, September 11). October cools to a 60°F high and 45°F low, which sits right at the lower edge of ideal playing conditions, and wind picks back up to 12.6 mph. September gives you better temperatures and the lightest rain calendar of the fall season.
